Fine wire is formed into a grid or mesh arrangement. This is then commonly layered over a perforated screen, which acts as a support cage for the mesh. On the flip side, if your process media is environmentally safe, meaning your application will only need cleaning infrequently, a Y-strainer may be less expensive. Mesh SizeEven when manufactured from stainless steel, Y-strainers are also a much more cost-effective inline filter strainer option than basket strainers. They also offer a more compact straining solution, which makes them ideal for applications limited by space. Most Y-strainers can also provide higher operating pressure ranges than basket-style strainers, despite their higher flow capacities. Fluoro rubber: There are a few different seal materials that have a fluoro rubber base: FKM, FPM, and Viton. These seals are noted for their resistance to chemicals and weathering.
Although there are exceptions, size for size, Y-type strainers have a lower dirt holding capacity than basket strainers, which means that they require more frequent cleaning. On steam systems, this is generally not a problem, except where high levels of rust are present, or immediately after commissioning when large amounts of debris can be introduced. On applications where significant amounts of debris are expected, a blowdown valve can usually be fitted in the strainer cap, which enables the strainer to use the pressure of the steam to be cleaned, and without having to shut down the plant. Finally, review the strainer's manufacturer's manual to determine if any other special considerations need to be plannedIt is advised that two gate valves are fitted to either side of this unit, ensuring all water is shut off when the baskets are being emptyed (1.5″ Valterra gate valves fit directly into the inlet and outlets) There are different kinds of Y strainers on the market designed to meet various industry needs. Keep the following criteria in mind: The central part of the unit is the strainer basket which removes and retains the harmful contamination. The basket is secured via a spring loaded handle which is compressed by the strainer cover. Baskets are manufactured from perforated plate and, for finer degrees of filtration, baskets are lined with mesh linings which can be either permanent fixtures or removable. There are various material options for the strainer's housing and seal. The variety of housing materials fit well with certain environments and media. The seal helps to extend the life of the strainer. Housing materials Basket strainers are also available in duplex styles as well as the standard singlex variants. Duplex basket strainers do not require shut-off when they become clogged or need to be cleaned. This means that they can be serviced without interrupting the flow of process fluids. As such, a duplex basket strainer would be prefered for continuous flow applications wherever businesses require systems to run without any downtime. The chart below is a handy resource to help convert from mesh to micron (or vice-versa). Mesh Screen It's important to take the time to size the mesh filter correctly. A mesh filter that is too small or too large can negatively affect the system. If the filter is too small, there will be a higher pressure drop from inlet to outlet. Additionally, removing too much debris from the flow can clog the filter and increase the pressure drop. If the filter is too large, the performance and life span of the downstream equipment can be negatively effected. Material options
