About this deal

and illustrated by Filipe Andrade is an unexpected explosion of reflections on immortality in the modern age. Now Laila wants to find and kill Darius before he discovers immortality so that she could go back to God's office and become godess of death again. His plot is a little looser than I wanted it to be, but it's intentional, I think, as that looseness helps it linger for longer and encourages the reader to fill in the gaps with themselves. The book answers these questions more profoundly and succinctly than I can, but I can tell you this: “Laila Starr” is absolutely gorgeous in its musings on death.

Its not the destination but the journey and reading this will change your perspective about so many things. It starts with the goddess of death removed from her job and sent down to earth for her to find a man named Darius who finds the cure to death. to immerse his heroine in any other city in the world — because what could they teach Laila about vivacity that Mumbai couldn’t? The reader is immersed in Mumbai, where technology and Hindu mythology combine to create a backdrop that feels only slightly exaggerated to anyone who has ever lived in India (including myself).Sent to live out her life on Earth, she spends the next decades trying to thwart that development so she can get her job back. And bonded with a mortal named Laila Starr we follow her journey as she meets this man at various points of his life and I love how each issue she dies and after many years is resurrected by Pranah (God of Life) but meets Darius and how he blames her when they meet in his adult self but right in the end, the convo they have and the revelations that happen change them and the story comes full circle and its one of the most beautiful endings ever. Told with the tone of a fairy tale or fable, this story strikes me as something Neil Gaiman could have written, though he might have side-stepped the chapter narrated by a cigarette. The architectural drawings of Mumbai are a treat in themselves, imbued with details of character while structurally impressive. It’s through these little, affirming details that the team manages to surprise the reader, despite the seemingly cyclical nature of The Many Deaths Of Laila Starr.

The five issues in the series — which re-released as a complete collection on February 1st — follow Laila Starr, the identity assumed by the goddess Death after she is banished from the heavenly pantheon (portrayed in the series as an efficient corporation where she works by removing souls from bodies). A powerful new series for fans of The Wicked + The Divine and The Dreaming from Ram V (Justice League Dark) and Filipe Andrade (Captain Marvel) that explores the fine line between living and dying in Mumbai through the lens of magical realism. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr has a fun premise - a sorta Indian take on a Pratchett/Gaiman’s Good Omens-style story - that turns out to be quite dull thanks to a lot of overly-simplistic storytelling. When Death (visually represented as Kali finds herself laid off because a boy has been born that will put an end to death, she is sent to live a mortal life and decides she must kill him to allow death to continue. It was also about Darius Shah and the many other people who touched her and his life, and how it all intertwined to create a story that flowed freely.

In teaching an immortal being what it means to die, the anomalous graphic novel series gives readers a new lens on living. Instead, take your time, and savor the art, the writing and, well, everything else — the graphic novel has a lot of things going on. I don't want to give anything away as this should just be read going in with a fresh and open mind, so please just go read this book. I love how as story moves, Laila learns lots of valuable lessons about mortal life and at one point she even forgets what she wanted to do.Because she was death, now she can also see ghosts, spirits and even hear the crows which makes her life more unique. There are moments in this perfectly brief story that take questions and doubts and fears I know intimately well and twist them in such a way to reveal a new insight (revelation? I would recommend this for fans of when the DC Vertigo line was at its peak, or people who love creative takes on mythology in a modern world. Filipe Andrade is throwing it down, its a beautiful looking book on every page, and like the best of any year, it's kinda of its own vibe, and I strongly suspect might be rewarded with award nominations for his work next year. Also, because of the repetitive nature of the story, I didn't find anything interesting or exciting in the plot.

Laila Starr” builds on bodies of mythology, art and urbanity that have existed for decades, if not eons; mirrors of the mundane are included to ground the magical. We follow Death as she finds herself without a purpose and living through several of her own deaths, and through this immortal being grappling with the emotions of those with a finite lifespan we must ultimately confront the question if death itself does have a purpose in life. Overall It's a very interesting, fresh and unique series from this year which I strongly recommend to everyone. A very unique and interesting 5 issues comic series that teaches some valuable lessons of life and death. The most interesting thing about each issue is that each time Laila meets Darius, two incidents happens and the way they happen was so interesting to see.I now have a poet to look up and read, and the end of a story that was so brilliantly unhinged that I am not upset we did not get a fairytale ending. Ram V's writing is very smooth, pacing is amazing and artwork is very colorful and unique which captures the atmosphere of Mumbai perfectly. It is rather amusing seeing Death, already in the stolen body of Laila, continuously meet an abrupt and tragic end and have to start over again. He takes cultural ideas and beliefs, combs through them for universal experiences and sentiments, and gives them a voice that's wholly unique and maybe a little transcendent.
